After completing driving lessons and obtaining a local license in Abu Dhabi, how can you convert it to a Chinese license for domestic road trips?

  1. Visit your local Vehicle Administration Office (VAA)

    • This is the most critical step. Regulations vary by region, so follow local procedures
    • The staff at Taiyuan's VAA were exceptionally helpful and responsible. After three hours of detailed consultation, they requested:
      • Proof of registration and payment for driving exams
      • Pass certificates for subjects 1, 2, and 3
      • Road test pass certificate
    • Documents in English or Arabic are acceptable
  2. Translate and print required documents

    • Use an accredited translation agency. For urgency, choose local same-day services; for cost savings, opt for online services
    • Screenshot of eye test proof from TAMM app
    • Screenshot of subject 1/2/3 pass certificates from TAMM
    • MOI's official license validity certification for China
    • Screenshots of all app operations from the home page
    • All documents must be translated to Chinese with agency credentials attached
  3. Prepare for subject 1 exam with intensive study

    • The VAA staff were very supportive. After I prepared all documents via VPN, they arranged an immediate subject 1 appointment
    • Complete 1700 questions in two days
    • Review 500 premium questions three times in two days
    • Practice error questions and mock exams ten times in one day
    • I started with the Driving Exam Bible app on Wednesday and passed subject 1 with 99% on Monday, receiving my license on-site
  4. Cost summary

    • Emergency VPN purchase: 200 CNY (hasty preparation)
    • Translation and rush fees: 360 CNY
    • Exam and processing fees: 90 CNY
    • Taxi expenses: 200 CNY
    • MOI certification documents: 200 CNY

Special thanks to the dedicated VAA staff. Once all requirements are met, you'll be free to explore China by car!
